How often should medical equipment be inspected?
At least on each manufacturer's recommended schedule, which for many devices is once a year. Hospitals can set different intervals for eligible equipment through an alternate equipment management (AEM) program; imaging equipment and medical lasers must stay on the manufacturer's schedule.
What does an inspection include?
A visual and mechanical check, electrical safety testing (ground and leakage current), performance checks against the manufacturer's specifications with calibrated test equipment, a dated inspection label on each device, and a written report of what passed, what failed and what we recommend.
What happens when a device fails?
It's tagged out of service and listed on the report with the reason. We quote the repair, or tell you when renting or replacing it makes more sense.
Will the records help with our survey?
Each report lists the device, asset tag, serial number, inspection date, tests performed and results. That supports your Joint Commission, CMS and Texas DSHS requirements; keep it in your equipment management file.
