A Vaporizer Doesn't Announce That It's Drifting

When an autoclave fails, it fails loudly. When a surgical table leaks, you see it on the floor.

A vaporizer out of calibration does neither. It keeps running, the dial keeps reading what it always read, and the delivered concentration quietly isn't what the setting says. A vaporizer that hasn't been properly serviced may not deliver the correct concentration of anesthetic agent, and can cause harm.

The clinical signal usually arrives before the technical one. A patient who wakes unexpectedly. A case that consistently needs a higher-than-normal dose. By the time anyone connects those to the equipment, the machine has been delivering the wrong concentration for a while.

Mr. Biomed Tech Services provides anesthesia machine repair, preventive maintenance, vaporizer calibration and replacement support across Texas. Our technicians are trained through respected Texas programs including CBET and TSTC, and every visit produces audit-ready documentation.

⚠️ Daily Checkout Is Not Preventive Maintenance

These get confused constantly, and the confusion is where machines fall through the gap.

Your team's daily checkout — built on the ASA Recommendations for Pre-Anesthesia Checkout — is essential, and it is not a substitute for scheduled service. It is designed to catch what has already gone wrong, not what is slowly going wrong.

Common Anesthesia Machine Faults We Service

Vaporizer

  1. Output out of calibration — the delivered concentration doesn't match the dial. Invisible without a gas analyzer.
  2. Vaporizer won't hold pressure — if pressure drops significantly and won't hold, the vaporizer needs servicing. A large pressure drop on activation can point to O-ring deterioration.
  3. Cases needing more agent than usual, or unexpected patient awareness—treat these as equipment signals, not just clinical variation.
  4. Filling, seating, or interlock faults.

Leaks and pressure

  1. Failed high- or low-pressure leak test — the most common reason a machine gets pulled from service.
  2. Breathing circuit and hose faults — cracking, perishing, poor connections.
  3. Check valve and connector faults.

Ventilator and delivery

  1. Ventilator not delivering set tidal volume — a delivery verification issue.
  2. Bellows faults — tears, sticking, failing to fill.
  3. Flow sensor drift — sensors require calibration; drift affects delivered volumes.

Monitoring, alarms and power

  1. Oxygen sensor failure or drift.
  2. Alarms not annunciating, or nuisance-alarming until staff stops trusting them.
  3. Battery won't hold a charge —the backup that matters during a power interruption or transport.
  4. Machine won't pass self-test on startup — software, sensor, or valve fault.
  5. Display and control faults.

Scavenging

  1. Waste gas scavenging underperforming — an occupational exposure issue for your OR staff, and one of the least-checked systems on the machine.

⚠️ A machine that fails checkout, fails a leak test, or shows any vaporizer irregularity should be removed from service until a qualified technician has cleared it. Anesthesia workstations are life-support devices — this is not equipment to work around.

Our Anesthesia Machine Services

Preventive Maintenance

Scheduled PM following OEM procedures and intervals, covering:

  • High and low pressure leak testing
  • Vaporizer output accuracy verification
  • Flow sensor calibration
  • Ventilator delivery testing
  • Scavenging system performance
  • Breathing circuits, hoses, and alarm inspection
  • Battery condition assessment
  • Electrical safety testing
  • Software updates and diagnostic review
  • Scheduled parts replacement

Vaporizer Cleaning & Calibration

Manufacturers generally recommend vaporizer service every one to three years with regular use. Calibration services are verified with a gas analyzer, measuring output volume percentage at the beginning, middle, and end of the range — because a vaporizer can read correctly at one setting and not at another. A calibration certificate is issued for your records.

Repair & Diagnostics

Vaporizers, ventilators, bellows, flow sensors, oxygen sensors, valves, circuits, control boards, displays, and batteries.

Rental

Short-term anesthesia machine rentals to keep a room running during service or a capacity gap.

New & Refurbished Sales

Between Services: What Your Team Can Do

Vaporizers last longer and drift less when they're looked after between visits:

  • Store units upright, in a climate-controlled environment
  • Keep them free of hair, dust, and particulates
  • Pre-saturate the wick with agent before extended storage
  • Log every irregularity — unexpected awareness, unusual agent consumption, a pressure test that "just barely" passed. Patterns matter more than single events.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should an anesthesia machine be serviced?

Follow your manufacturer's recommended PM schedule and your facility's equipment management plan — OEM intervals govern. Separately, vaporizers are generally recommended for service every one to three years with regular use. Daily pre-anesthesia checkout by the provider is required in addition to scheduled biomed PM, not instead of it.

How often does an anesthesia vaporizer need calibration?

Manufacturers typically recommend servicing vaporizers every one to three years under regular use. Calibration verifies output with a gas analyzer at the beginning, middle, and end of the range, since a vaporizer can be accurate at one setting and off at another.

What are the signs a vaporizer is out of calibration?

The clinical signals usually come first: unexpected patient awareness, or cases consistently needing higher-than-normal agent. Technically, a vaporizer that won't hold pressure, or shows a large pressure drop when activated, needs servicing — that drop can indicate O-ring deterioration. An out-of-calibration vaporizer may not deliver the correct concentration and can cause harm, so take it out of service.

Our machine failed its leak test. What now?

Remove it from service and have it diagnosed. Leaks can originate in the breathing circuit, hoses, connectors, check valves or the vaporizer mount. A failed leak test is the most common reason a machine is pulled, and it's usually repairable.

The machine won't pass its startup self-test. Is it serious?

It needs diagnosis before use. Self-test failures can come from sensors, valves, or software. Don't bypass or repeat-cycle a failed self-test to get a machine into a case.

Do you check the scavenging system?

Yes. Waste gas scavenging performance is part of our PM, and it's one of the least-checked systems on the machine — an occupational exposure issue for your OR staff.

Can we rent an anesthesia machine during service?

Yes — short-term rentals so a room stays open while yours is being serviced.

Do you service standalone vaporizers?

Yes, including cleaning, calibration, and repair, with a calibration certificate issued.
