X-Ray Machine Rental in Texas: Portable and Fixed Units Explained

Portable X-ray machine rental in Texas

Renting an X-ray machine is a practical way to add imaging without the capital cost of buying one. Clinics use rentals to cover a machine that is down for repair, to test demand before buying, to staff a temporary site or to handle a seasonal surge. Hospitals and long-term care providers rent portable units for bedside imaging when an extra machine is needed for a few weeks or months. This guide explains how medical X-ray machine rental works in Texas, which type of machine to rent and what to settle before the unit arrives. For our full rental catalog, see our medical equipment rental page.

When renting an X-ray machine makes sense

  • Your own machine is down. A rental keeps imaging running while a generator, tube or detector is repaired or replaced.
  • You are opening a new site and want imaging available before a purchased system is installed.
  • Demand is temporary, such as a seasonal rise in urgent care visits, a construction project that closes an imaging room or a short contract.
  • You want to try before you buy and see how a digital system fits your workflow and volume.
  • You need bedside imaging in patient rooms, a skilled nursing unit or an ICU for a limited period.

If you expect to need the machine for years, buying is usually cheaper over time. Renting shines when the need is short, uncertain or urgent.

Types of X-ray machines you can rent

Portable (mobile) X-ray units

Portable X-ray machines are mounted on a motorized or push cart and brought to the patient. They are used for bedside chest, abdominal and extremity imaging in hospitals, long-term care and some urgent care settings. Most portable rentals today are digital, with a wireless detector and an onboard display, so images are available within seconds.

Fixed radiographic systems

Fixed systems with a table and wall stand are installed in a dedicated, shielded room. Renting a fixed system is less common because installation takes time and the room must meet shielding requirements. It can still make sense for a temporary clinic or a long renovation.

DR retrofit detectors

If your machine works but uses film or computed radiography, a digital detector retrofit can be rented or bought separately. Our digital X-ray upgrade services in Dallas explain how a retrofit fits an existing room.

C-arms for fluoroscopy

If you need live fluoroscopy for procedures rather than plain films, you need a C-arm, not a radiographic unit. See our C-arm machines in Texas for rental options.

What to settle before the machine arrives

Registration with Texas DSHS

X-ray machines used in Texas must be registered with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). The DSHS X-ray frequently asked questions explain who needs to register and when. Before a rented unit is used on patients, confirm with your radiation safety officer that registration covers it, and keep the unit's records with your registration file.

Room, power and shielding

Portable units plug into standard or dedicated outlets depending on the model, and charge between uses. Check that the patient areas where you plan to use the unit, and the paths between them, can take the machine's size and weight. Fixed systems need a room with shielding designed for the expected workload. Ask your physicist or radiation safety officer before installing a fixed rental.

Operators and safety

Only properly credentialed staff should operate the machine. Plan for lead aprons, thyroid shields and dosimetry badges for staff, and make sure everyone knows the safe distance from the tube during exposures with a portable unit.

Images and IT

Decide where images will go. Digital rentals can usually send images to your PACS or a viewing workstation over your network. Give your IT team the details early so the unit can be configured and tested before the first patient.

What affects the cost of an X-ray rental

  • Machine type: a portable digital unit, a fixed system or a detector retrofit.
  • Rental length: monthly rates are usually lower per day than short rentals.
  • Delivery and setup: distance from our Garland headquarters and whether installation is needed.
  • Service during the rental: ask whether repairs, preventive maintenance and a backup plan are included.
  • Accessories: extra detectors, grids, lead aprons and workstation software.

When comparing quotes, ask for the total cost of the rental period, including delivery, pickup and setup, and ask what happens if the machine fails mid-rental.

Testing and inspection

A rented X-ray machine should arrive tested and documented. Ask for the date of the last performance evaluation, which in Texas is performed by or under the supervision of a licensed medical physicist, and for the electrical safety and function checks done before delivery. Our guide to X-ray machine inspection in Texas explains what those checks cover.
