Hospital Bed Repair: Quick Checks Before You Call

Many hospital bed calls turn out to have a simple cause. Before you book a repair, staff can check a few things safely:

• Bed will not move at all: confirm the plug is seated in a working wall outlet, the power indicator is lit and the bed is not in a nurse lockout mode on the footboard or pendant.
• One function works, another does not: try the same function from a second control (pendant, siderail or footboard). If one control works, the fault is likely in the failed control or its cable, not the motor.
• Bed moves slowly or stops partway: check that nothing is caught under the frame or between the deck and the rails, and that the patient weight is within the safe working load.
• Bed exit alarm or scale reads wrong: zero the scale with the bed empty and linens in place, then check the alarm zone setting before assuming a sensor fault.
• Bed will not roll or will not lock: look for hair and debris wrapped around the casters and check the brake pedal linkage.
