Hydraulic faults

1. Table won't raise, and fluid is on the floor — typically a leak in a hydraulic line, or a failed pump. In many cases, a solenoid repair resolves it without a full pump replacement, which is a significantly different cost conversation.
2. Table drifts down under load — internal seal or valve leakage. This is the fault surgeons notice first and tolerate longest, and it's a patient positioning risk.
3. Oil seepage under the covers — often invisible until a PM. Seepage that hasn't reached the floor yet usually signals a developing failure, not a finished one.
4. Hesitant or uneven lift — inconsistent pace during articulation, often air in the system, low fluid, or a failing pump.
5. Table won't unlock — commonly inadequate hydraulic fluid or a solenoid fault.

Electrical and control faults

1. Hand control or pendant not working — most often the cable is pinched, severed, or unplugged, not the control itself. Most tables carry backup controls for basic functions, which is worth knowing mid-case.
2. Buttons do nothing — an electrical disconnect somewhere between the control and the actuator.
3. Battery won't hold a charge — degraded batteries are a leading cause of "dead table" calls, and one of the cheapest fixes.
4. Damaged power cord — a safety hazard, not a cosmetic issue.
5. Control board failure — real, but expensive, and it should be ruled out last, after the cheaper causes are eliminated. A vendor who leads with a board replacement is guessing.

1. Floor locks won't engage — frequently missing protective pads on the table feet, or a microswitch that needs adjustment or replacement.
2. Tabletop instability — excessive rotational, lateral, or end-to-end play in the top.
3. Grinding or noisy gears during articulation.
4. Tripped safety microswitch — some tables block movement when a foot is lowered too far. It's a protection feature, and it's often mistaken for a failure.
5. Torn pads, gaskets, and covers — taped cushions are an infection control problem as well as a comfort one.

My surgical table won't raise. What's wrong?

The most common causes are a leak in a hydraulic line or a failed hydraulic pump — especially if you see fluid on the floor. It can also be low fluid, a solenoid fault, or a tripped safety microswitch if a table foot has been lowered too far. Take the table out of service and have it diagnosed; hydraulic repairs should not be attempted without training.

Why does my OR table drift down under load?

Drift almost always points to internal seal or valve leakage in the hydraulic system. It's a patient positioning risk, and it doesn't resolve on its own. A technician should test the table both loaded and unloaded to confirm the extent.

The remote isn't working. Does the whole table need replacing?

Usually not. The most common cause is the cable between the hand control and the table being pinched, severed or unplugged. Most tables also have backup controls for basic functions. A control board failure is possible but should be ruled out last — it's the most expensive cause, not the most likely one.

How often should surgical tables have preventive maintenance?

Can a hydraulic leak be repaired, or does the pump need replacing?

Both happen. In many cases, the fault is a solenoid or a line rather than the pump itself, and a solenoid repair is far less involved than a full pump replacement. That's exactly what the diagnosis is for — and why you shouldn't accept a replacement quote without one.
