Socorro and the rest of the El Paso area sit far from most Texas equipment hubs, and our Garland headquarters is roughly 620 miles away. That does not mean you cannot rent a hospital bed here, but it does mean planning ahead pays off. This guide explains how to time a rental, prepare the home and keep the bed working through a long rental in the desert climate. If you would rather own the bed, see our medical equipment page for beds for sale.
Start planning early
Because beds travel a long way to reach El Paso County, the most useful thing you can do is call as soon as you know a bed may be needed. Good moments to start are:
- When a surgery date is set, rather than after the operation.
- When a hospital case manager first mentions that a bed will be needed at home.
- When a hospice or home health agency begins planning care.
- When a family member's mobility is clearly declining, before an urgent need arises.
We confirm the delivery date when you book. If the discharge date moves, tell us right away so the delivery can be adjusted.
Choosing the bed when you cannot easily swap it
In Dallas, a bed that turns out to be the wrong type can be swapped quickly. Farther away, it is better to get it right the first time. Before booking, confirm with the care team:
- Whether a semi-electric or full-electric bed is needed, based on who will provide care.
- The user's weight, so the bed's safe working load fits, and whether a bariatric frame is needed.
- Whether a pressure redistribution mattress is recommended.
- Whether rails, a trapeze bar or an overbed table are needed.
Our guide to hospital bed rental in Texas explains each bed type, and our El Paso bariatric bed guide covers larger users.
Preparing the home
- Measure doors and hallways on the path to the room. Electric beds come apart for delivery but still need a clear path.
- Check for steps at the entry and plan how the sections will be carried in.
- Choose a spot near a wall outlet, with space on one side for a caregiver.
- Keep the bed away from direct sun through windows, which can make the mattress uncomfortably hot.
Living with desert heat
El Paso summers are hot and dry. Keep the room cool, especially for someone who spends most of the day in bed, and watch for signs of overheating or dehydration. Use breathable cotton linens and change them often. Dry air can also build static and dust, so wipe the frame and hand control regularly and keep the area under the bed clean. During summer storms, power can flicker; know how your bed behaves in an outage and keep it in a low, safe position overnight.
Service during the rental
We provide on-site setup and service in Socorro and El Paso, with visits scheduled in advance. Service requests receive a response in under 8 business hours, Monday through Friday. Many problems can be solved over the phone, such as a hand control lockout or a loose plug, so call before assuming a bed is broken. If a part is needed, we schedule a visit and bring it. For the most common faults and quick checks, see our hospital bed repair page.
When buying makes more sense
For a long or open-ended need, buying a reconditioned bed can cost less than months of rental, and it avoids arranging pickup across a long distance later. Reconditioned beds from Mr. Biomed Tech Services come with a 90-day warranty, and our CBET-certified engineers inspect frames, motors and controls before a bed ships. If insurance will pay for the bed, check the coverage rules on Medicare.gov or with your plan first.
Other rental equipment
If you also need a wheelchair, commode, patient lift or other equipment, ask when you book so it can arrive with the bed. Our rental services page lists what we rent.
A checklist for delivery day
- Have someone at home who can make decisions about where the bed goes.
- Clear the path and the space where the bed will stand before the technician arrives.
- Have the mattress and linens you plan to use ready, or confirm that a mattress is included.
- Ask the technician to show every function, including how to lower the bed if the power goes out.
- Check that the side rails latch firmly and that the casters lock.
- Write down the service phone number and keep it near the bed.
- Agree on how and when to call to end the rental, and how pickup will be scheduled.
Taking ten minutes to go through these points means fewer surprises later, especially when a service visit has to be scheduled in advance.
