What is a Hoyer lift?
"Hoyer lift" is the name people use for a mobile patient lift: a base on casters, a mast and boom, and a fabric sling that goes under the patient. The caregiver raises the patient in the sling, rolls the lift and lowers them onto the bed, chair or commode. It protects the patient from falls and the caregiver from back injuries. OSHA's ergonomics guidelines for nursing homes recommend mechanical lifts for patients who can't bear weight.
Manual vs electric Hoyer lift
| Manual (hydraulic) lift | Electric lift | |
|---|---|---|
| How it lifts | Caregiver pumps a handle | Battery motor, push-button control |
| Good for | Occasional transfers at home | Several transfers a day, facilities, heavier patients |
| Effort for caregiver | More | Less |
| Upkeep | Hydraulic seals and pump | Battery, charger and actuator |
Other patient lifts include sit-to-stand lifts for patients who can bear some weight; see our guide to stand-up lifts.
Choosing the right lift and sling
- Weight capacity: pick a lift rated above the patient's weight; bariatric lifts cover higher weights.
- Base width: the legs must open around the chair or fit under the bed.
- Lift range: check that it reaches the bed height and lowers to the floor if needed.
- Sling size and type: full-body, toileting or hammock slings, sized to the patient.
- Room space: leave room to turn the lift between the bed and chair.
Buy or rent a Hoyer lift?
- Rent for recovery after surgery or short-term care at home.
- Buy reconditioned for long-term home care; it comes inspected, tested and with a 90-day warranty.
- Buy new for facilities that want matching models across units.
Most families who rent a lift also need a bed; see our hospital bed rental options.
What affects the price of a Hoyer lift
- Manual or electric: electric lifts cost more but save caregiver effort.
- Weight capacity: bariatric lifts with higher limits cost more.
- New or reconditioned: a reconditioned lift costs less and is tested before delivery.
- Slings: most patients need at least two slings so one can be washed.
- Rental term: monthly rentals cost less per day than weekly ones.

Using a Hoyer lift safely at home
- Lock the bed brakes and raise the bed to a comfortable working height.
- Check the sling for frayed straps or torn seams before each use.
- Open the lift legs wide for stability before lifting.
- Lift only high enough to clear the bed, and move slowly.
- Lower the patient fully onto the chair before unhooking the sling.
Hoyer lift repair and inspection
Lifts that drift down, stop mid-lift or won't charge need service before the next transfer. Our patient lift repair team fixes hydraulic leaks, actuators, batteries, chargers and casters, and checks slings for wear. Facilities can add lifts to our annual equipment inspection visit.

Hoyer Lift: FAQs
Can one person use a Hoyer lift?
Many facilities require two caregivers for every transfer. At home, follow the instructions for your lift and sling, and ask your care team whether one person is safe for your situation.
Can I rent a Hoyer lift for home use?
Yes. We deliver the lift and sling, set it up and show the family how to use it safely.
Is an electric Hoyer lift better than a manual one?
An electric lift takes less effort and is better for frequent transfers. A manual lift costs less and suits occasional use.
Do you repair lifts you didn't sell?
Yes. We service most manual and electric patient lifts, whoever sold them.
Hoyer is a trademark of its owner. Mr. Biomed Tech Services is an independent provider and is not affiliated with the trademark owner; the name is used only because people search for patient lifts by it.
