Refurbished Stryker S3 (Secure 3) Beds in Dallas: Inspection Checklist

Refurbished Stryker S3 beds, often listed as "Secure 3" beds, are widely available because many hospitals have replaced them with newer models. A well-refurbished S3 can serve a Dallas med-surg unit, surgery center or long-term acute care hospital for years. A poorly refurbished one can arrive with a dead battery, a scale that reads several pounds out and a bed-exit system that never alarms. Before you look at the bed

• Serial number and model: get a photo of the label and confirm it is an S3 med-surg bed.
• Options list: ask which options the bed has: scale, Chaperone bed exit, iBed, siderail communications, Zoom drive.
• Recall status: search the model in the FDA medical device recall database and ask whether any recalls or field corrections were completed on that serial number.
• History: ask where the bed came from and what was replaced during refurbishment.

The hands-on checklist

Frame, deck and casters

• No cracked welds, bent sections or corrosion
• Casters roll and swivel freely; central brakes lock all wheels and hold on a slope
• Steer function (if fitted) tracks straight

Motions

• Height, head, knee and Trendelenburg functions run smoothly through their full range
• No drift when the bed is left in a raised position
• No grinding, clicking or hesitation from actuators
• Lowest and highest deck heights match the specification

Siderails and CPR

• Every siderail raises, latches, uses the intermediate position and lowers with one hand
• No cracks in the rail panels; rail controls (if fitted) work
• CPR release flattens the head section quickly and fully
• Headboard removes and refits securely

Scale

• Zeroes correctly with the mattress and linens on
• Reads a known test weight within the manufacturer's tolerance, on more than one part of the deck

Chaperone bed exit

• Arms in each zone and sensitivity level
• Alarms when the test load moves as expected for each zone
• Alert reaches nurse call if the bed is connected

Electrical

• Battery holds a charge and supports the specified movements when unplugged
• Power cord and plug undamaged
• Electrical safety test (ground and leakage) passed and recorded

Communications and drive

• Nurse call, speaker and light controls work if the siderail package is fitted
• Zoom drive (if fitted) moves the bed forward and reverse, and its battery charges

Mattress

• Correct size for the S3 frame
• Cover intact, with no staining inside

Red flags

• No serial number label, or a label that doesn't match the paperwork
• Options described as "available" rather than fitted and tested
• Rails from another model or missing headboard
• A scale that won't zero or drifts
• Sold as is at a price close to tested refurbished beds

Parts that usually need replacing

On S3 beds coming out of years of hospital service, a few parts wear more than others. Batteries are the most common: a bed that sat in storage may have a battery that no longer holds enough charge to lower it. Siderail latches and release handles take heavy daily use. Caster wheels flatten and brakes wear. Hand controls and rail control panels lose button response or crack. Mattress covers split at the seams. A thorough refurbishment replaces these rather than noting them, so ask the seller which were replaced on your bed and keep the list with its records.

After delivery

Once the bed is in your facility, run a short acceptance check before the first patient: every motion, rails, CPR release, brakes, scale zero and bed exit. Record the result as the first entry in the bed's maintenance file and schedule its next preventive maintenance. Buying several S3 beds

If you are buying a batch, ask for the test record of every bed, not a sample, and check that the option sets match. A unit where half the beds have Chaperone and half don't is harder for staff to use safely than one where every bed is the same.
