The Philips CX50 is a compact, premium-grade portable ultrasound system widely used in cardiology and vascular work, with transesophageal (TEE) imaging, including Live 3D TEE on xMATRIX probes, in a unit light enough to carry between rooms. Hospitals, cardiology groups, vascular labs and surgery centers in Texas still look for the Philips CX50 ultrasound because it brings cart-level cardiac imaging to the bedside, the cath lab or the OR. Mr. Biomed Tech Services offers refurbished Philips CX50 ultrasound systems for sale on our medical equipment page, CX50 rentals through our medical equipment rental service, and repair and preventive maintenance for systems you already own.
What the Philips CX50 is designed for
Philips positions the CX50 for cardiology first. Its CX50 xMATRIX brochure describes adult and pediatric echo, interventional cardiology in cath and EP labs (including 2D intracardiac echo and structural heart procedures), intraoperative TEE in surgery, vascular imaging and neonatal echo, at the bedside, in the CCU and NICU, and at satellite sites. A reseller specification sheet lists the system at 16.2 lb (7.3 kg) with a 15-inch monitor, which explains why the CX50 is often carried on a cart between rooms rather than parked in one.
Philips CX50 transducers
The transducer you buy or rent decides what the CX50 can do. The brochure lists these probes:
| Transducer | Typical use |
|---|---|
| S5-1, S4-2 | Adult 2D echo |
| S8-3 | Pediatric 2D echo |
| S12-4 | Neonatal 2D echo |
| S7-3t | Pediatric and adult 2D TEE |
| X7-2t, X8-2t | Adult 2D and Live 3D TEE (xMATRIX) |
| C5-1 | Deep abdominal vascular |
| C8-5 | Peripheral vascular |
| L12-3, L12-5 | Superficial and deep vascular |
| L15-7io | Intraoperative and superficial |
Up to three transducers can be connected, and features such as Live xPlane, SonoCT and XRES image processing are part of the platform. Not every system has every option licensed, so always check which software options are enabled on a specific CX50.
Who the CX50 suits, and who it does not
- Good fit: cardiology practices doing bedside and inpatient echo, cath and EP labs needing intraprocedural imaging, cardiac anesthesia teams doing intraoperative TEE, vascular labs and hospitals that want one portable system for several units.
- Consider other systems: if your main work is general abdominal imaging or obstetrics. The CX50 is cardiac-focused, and a general-imaging system may suit those departments better. Our ultrasound machine buying guide compares system types, and our GE Vivid Q guide covers another portable cardiac option.
Buying a refurbished Philips CX50: what to check
- Software version and licensed options. Confirm which features are enabled (for example Live 3D TEE, stress echo or vascular packages) and that they match your exams.
- Transducer condition. Ask for element test results for every probe. Inspect lenses, housings, cables and connectors.
- TEE probe safety testing. TEE probes need electrical leakage testing and inspection of the bending section and insertion tube for bite marks or cracks. A damaged TEE probe must not be used.
- Battery and power. Check battery health and run time on battery, and that the power supply and cart charging work.
- Display, controls and ports. Look for dead pixels, worn keys or trackball, and test every transducer port.
- DICOM and connectivity. Confirm wired and wireless DICOM export to your PACS. The brochure notes wired and wireless DICOM connection and USB/DVD export.
- Documentation. Ask for a service report, electrical safety test results and the warranty in writing.
Refurbished ultrasound systems from Mr. Biomed Tech Services come with a 90-day warranty, and our CBET-certified engineers test every system before delivery.
Renting a Philips CX50
A CX50 rental is useful for covering a cardiology system out for repair, staffing a temporary cath lab or OR schedule, or trialing TEE imaging before buying. When you rent, specify the transducers you need, especially TEE probes, so the system arrives configured for your cases.
TEE probe care and infection control
TEE probes are semi-critical devices that need high-level disinfection between patients. Follow the manufacturer's reprocessing instructions and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine's transducer cleaning guidelines. Use only disinfectants the manufacturer approves; the wrong chemistry can crack lenses and damage the insertion tube. Store TEE probes hanging straight in a ventilated cabinet, and use a bite guard during every exam.
Philips CX50 repair and maintenance
The most common CX50 service needs we see are probe faults (dead elements, cracked lenses, cable damage), TEE probe leakage failures, worn batteries, trackball and control panel wear, and connectivity problems after network changes. Preventive maintenance should include probe inspections and element testing, electrical safety tests on the system and TEE probes, battery checks and a review of software and DICOM settings. Our ultrasound machine repair team covers the CX50, and replacement probes and boards are covered in our guide to ultrasound machine parts. Scheduled safety checks are available through our medical equipment inspection service.
Safety and standards
Ultrasound uses non-ionizing energy, but the FDA's ultrasound imaging page notes it can slightly heat tissue, which is one reason acoustic output and probe safety are checked during maintenance.
Delivery and service across Texas
For in-stock systems, delivery and setup can usually be scheduled the same day across Dallas–Fort Worth from our Garland headquarters, with same-day on-site support across the metroplex. Elsewhere in Texas, we confirm delivery dates when you order and provide on-site setup and service with visits scheduled in advance. Service requests receive a response in under 8 business hours, Monday through Friday. See our medical equipment repair in Dallas and our service locations.
