My ultrasound probe isn't reading. What's wrong?

If the system doesn't recognize the probe at all, start with the connector — bent pins or a dented housing from misalignment are among the most common causes, and they're repairable. If the probe is recognized but the image is poor, the likely causes are dead or weak elements, cable damage, or lens delamination. Try the probe in another port to isolate whether the fault is the probe or the system.

How much does it cost to repair an ultrasound transducer?

It depends entirely on the failure. Connector pins, cable damage, strain relief, and lens or membrane damage are typically the least expensive repairs, especially when caught early. Extensive element array damage is where repair costs approach replacement. This is why early evaluation matters — delayed damage escalates both the severity and the price. Can a delaminated probe lens be repaired?

Often yes. Delamination is usually caused by over-cleaning or cleaning agents the probe isn't rated for, and the repair is typically straightforward — and far cheaper than a new probe. Check your cleaning protocol at the same time, or it will recur.

How do I know if my probe has dead elements?

You can't see them. Dead and weak elements produce no visible damage — only subdued intensity or dropout in part of the image, which sonographers often unconsciously compensate for. Confirming them requires specialized testing equipment, which is why probe testing belongs in your PM schedule rather than waiting for a complaint.

What does a refurbished ultrasound machine cost?
